Residential conversion of listed farm buildings near Box Hill, Surrey

Project for a contractor/developer to convert a group of listed but derelict Victorian farm buildings into a residential courtyard of nine houses.

The site was in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the development was closely monitored by English Heritage and the local planning authority, who were concerned to preserve the buildings’ general appearance so far as possible. The original buildings had walls of coarse flintwork framed by red brickwork, and steep slate roofs. The key issue was how to design functionally adequate and attractively marketable dwellings, which required creation of upper floors under the roofs and formation of new doors and windows, all in a reticent manner acceptable under the heritage constraints.
